Coaching Youth Basketball: A Guide for First Time Coaches, Second Edition is out!
Shortly after the release of Coaching Youth Basketball in March 2021, I realized I had many more thoughts and ideas to share.
“‘That should be in the book!’ was my organizing principle around overlooked ideas as I began to consolidate into a notebook numerous slightly off-topic or advanced items—plus tips I’d flat-out missed the first time around—into a document I dubbed ‘Overtime.'”

This material and more, along with a brand new cover, appears in the second (and final!) edition of my labor of love project — now happily put to bed. Best of all: A true delight for me is the inclusion of a Foreword, contributed by Steven Dietz.
A highly regarded playwright and drama professor at the University of Texas — and sports fan extraordinaire — the affable Mr. Dietz was uniquely qualified for this task: He and I coached our sons, Abraham and Ben, together on our very first foray into coaching.
Steven writes: “Though I am long removed from my days as an athlete, I can still spot a person who played competitive sports in their youth. I saw it in my students at the University of Texas at Austin, those who had an uncanny ability to rebound from adversity with grit and resilience. I’m convinced all our Saturday mornings on the basketball court (or the baseball/soccer field) start us on the road toward life’s most necessary lessons: preparation, commitment, discipline, positive attitude, mental toughness, responsibility, generosity. And if, in those formative years, we are lucky enough to have a coach like Stuart Wade, all the better. My son Abraham was one of those lucky kids. He learned invaluable lessons from “Coach Wade”: lessons about basketball, teamwork, accountability, and sportsmanship. Any reader of Coaching Youth Basketball is destined to learn the same – all of it delivered with Stuart’s trademark cordiality, candor and Hoosier Pride.
This welcome, timely, and necessary book is destined to become a go-to resource for first-time youth basketball coaches and more experienced coaches looking to refresh or refine their approach.”
